Cape Town and the
surrounding area has long been ranked amongst the world’s most
beautiful places. Who does not recognize that wonderful picture
of Table Mountain taken from across the bay. The ruggedness of
the mountains that surround Cape Town are softened by the
numerous quiet sandy beaches and colourful fishing harbours that
are dotted around the peninsular. The port of Cape Town is
Africa’s most famous port and this was the first part of South
Africa to be settled back in the seventeenth century. Part of
the old port has been rebuilt and named the Victoria and Alfred
Waterfront. It is a colourful mixture of pubs, restaurants and
up-market shops, and a hive of activity. This is a definite
venue for the tourist.
All around the peninsular are dotted small resorts that are
popular with both South African and foreign tourists. Cape Town
is the perfect base for exploring the Fairest Cape in the entire
world. This is the setting-off point for the Garden Route, for
the Winelands and for the great Karoo. From here also the
visitor can venture further East to Settler Country, and on the
way he can spend valuable time watching the Southern Right Whale
playing with her newly born calf.
There is no doubt as to why Cape Town has become one of the
world’s most popular holiday venues. Not only is this a place of
great beauty, but the city also has a most agreeable
Mediterranean climate. It can become quite windy at times, but
with more than one hundred beaches to choose from it is always
possible to find a sheltered spot. Be sure to take a trip to the
top of Table Mountain, easily accessible by cable car.
