Animal of the Month

African elephants are native to a wide variety of habitats including semi-desert scrub, open savannas and dense forest regions. Their habitat ranges from sea level to 16,000 feet (4,877 m). The African elephant is the largest living land animal and weighs up to 5,400 kg. It inhabits the Savannah, brush, forest, river valleys, and semi-desert regions of Africa south of the Sahara Desert.  Besides its greater size, it differs from the Asian elephant in having larger ears and tusks, a sloping forehead, and two “fingers” at the tip of its trunk, compared to only one in the Asian species. African elephants are capable of making a wide variety of vocal sounds, such as grunts, purrs, bellows, whistles, and the obvious trumpeting.  Elephants and people have always had an interesting relationship.

South Africa, Twenty20 Cricket Worldcup

South Africa is very proud to host the inaugural Twenty20 Cricket World Cup. A total of twelve teams are participating in this first Twenty20 Cricket World Cup.The teams are divided into four groups of three teams. The top two teams in each group qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament.

The four groups are as follows;

Group A - South Africa, West Indies & Bangladesh
Group B - England, Australia and Zimbabwe
Group C - New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Kenya
Group D - Pakistan, India and Scotland

Three cities and venues are being used for this 14 day cricket extravaganza.

Johannesburg, will host the opening and Final games at the Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium, which is affectionately known as the Bull ring, due to its shape and many classic encounters.

The ticket price are very reasonable ranging from $ 3 (ZAR 20 per person for the minor games and $ 20(ZAR 160 per person), for the Final.

The opening match is between the hosts South Africa and West Indies at Liberty Life Wanderers Stadium on 11th September and Final match of 20-20 World cup will be played on September 24th 2007.

Cape Town Newlands Cricket Stadium, is renown as one of the most picturesque Stadiums in the World. The Stadium is guarded by the magnificent Table Mountain and the infrastructure and excellent design are World class.

Durban - Sahara Stadium Kingsmead. This beautiful ground is about one kilometre from the warm Indian Ocean coast line in Durban. Durban has some of the finest beaches in the World.

This historic cricket ground hosted the Timeless test 1938 -39 that was played between England and South Africa for 9 days and ended in a draw as the Second World War was imminent and their steam ship had to sail back to England.
Set 696 runs to win in the fourth innings they had reached an astonishing 654/5 and had a real chance of winning the match when they had to leave.

Bill Edrich was top scorer with 219 in a Test in which there were five other centurions. An aggregate of 1,981 runs was scored. The match was abandoned because of rain. There were 43 hours 16 minutes of actual playing time.

It is amazing to consider that in all 27 Games will be completed in a 14 days where as the Timeless test didn’t have a result after 9 days!!!

Sahara Stadium Kingsmead, is still on of the few cricket grounds that still has grass verges on which you can sun tan or let the children play.

 "Potjie Kos"

is a meal cooked in an iron pot over the fire. The way to cook a potjie is usually very slow. Many types of meat can be used for a potjie but here we have chosen one of the favorites - oxtail.
