Animal of the Quarter

A truly majestic animal has been nicknamed the King of the Jungle, because of its noble stature, strength and beauty. The full grown males have a thick mane of hair round their necks which are either brown or black in color. The lions are a tawny color which is a mixture of yellow and brown. The mature males are around 4 feet (122cm) in height and about 5 to 8 feet (152 to 243 cms) in length. A fully grown male weighs between 300 to 500 lbs,(136 to 225 kgs) The lioness is usually smaller and weighs less than the male cat.

The muscles of a lion are powerful and aid them in hunting for their prey and the leg muscles in chasing and catching their prey. A lion can run at a speed of 50mph (80kph) and can leap almost 35 ft (10 metre) in length. The powerful roar of both the males and the females can be heard over a distance of at least 5 miles (8 kilometres). In their natural habitat the lion could live up to 13 years, and in captivity even longer.
South Africa's free-ranging lion population, an estimated 2,700 animals, lives mostly in and around Kruger National Park in the northeast corner of the country. Bovine tuberculosis poses a growing threat to the lions. The disease was probably introduced to South Africa through domestic cattle brought in by European settlers at the end of the 18th century.

Lions are found the Sahara dessert and in some parts of eastern Africa. Earlier lions were found all over Africa, but now with the numbers dwindled to a drastic low, they only inhabit these regions. However lions can be seen in several of the game parks in Africa where they are taken care of as an endangered species. These parks are Amboseli National Park, Kruger National Park, Matusadona National Park, Chobe National Park, Moremi Wildlife Reserve, Djuma Reserve, Ruaha National Park, The Selous Park to name a few.
The lion which is a totally carnivorous animal, hunts for its food and feeds on buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala, wild hogs and sometimes on small animals like hares and birds. If the food is really hard to come by they may even attempt attacking an elephant, rhino or hippo.

Lions live in prides or groups of around 15 and have a single male as its leader. Sometimes there could be 2 or 3 younger males in the pride. However, most of the group consists of the young ones. These groups or prides stay together for a few years until another male comes along and takes over the group. They love being together, and while resting will enjoy being affectionate to each other by touching and rubbing each other.

The females are the main hunters as they have to feed their young. They are mainly nocturnal creatures and hunt down their prey by stalking them.

The mating season is right through the year and the gestation is a little less than 4 months. The female lion normally has around 3 or 4 cubs.
